Public Artists Talks

2024 Talk for the Paisley Philosophical Institution at the University of the West of Scotland Paisley Campus

"Why I Hate Talking About Art And It's Got Nothing To Do With Me Anyway"

A discussion about  the “percept” of sculpture, experiencing real will stilling stuff, art that liberates us from suffering  and the importance of traditional skills and craftsmanship vs inaccessible art jargon to describe the contemporal “concept.” wherein aesthetic principles don’t seem to matter, and how damaging this  emphasis of the concept being the be all and end all is. I was analysing my own work and exploring art belonging to the world versus the individual artist. Also trying to escape the idea of the artist's identity when creating sculpture. But also  what we experience and our abilities inevitably inhibiting  enabling and defining what we are able to share with one another through making sculptures, and the necessary vulnerability involved to do so allows for their emotional authenticity. How, in the face of horror, badness and absurdity, we need love and hope in our lives  more than ever, how it is  a true endeavour, to be in service to the arts through craftsmanship and skill, and telling stories with love and sentimentality and sweetness.
