About

My name is Saskia Robinson, (they/them) I am a sculptor based in Renfrewshire, Scotland. I specialise in creating sculpture and relief work in clay, plaster and bronze within the neoclassical tradition. I graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in Sculpture (2020). I am drawn to the universality of classical aesthetics and principles. I strive to  create sculpted human forms in connection to and as allegories of nature and as a means of expressing stories and characters of historic and mythological significance.  This means of storytelling and evoking an emotional and spiritual connection through sculpting flora, fauna and the human form in clay is fundamentally very close to my heart with everything that I do as an artist.

Much of my research is invested in Hellenistic sculpture as well as the art of the Italian Renaissance, Neoclassicism, Greek and Celtic mythology and Scottish cultural heritage, The Scottish Enlightenment movement and philosophy.

I value traditional craftsmanship and always utilise traditional materials and techniques to make work. I find being surrounded by nature, observation of the natural world and a foundation of drawing, understanding of natural form is essential to inform  any sculpture I make.

I believe art should liberate a person from the suffering in their life and that everyone deserves to see beautiful things that move them. In terms of pure percept alone, I think that seeing art should slow you down and soothe you in our world that’s very fast and loud and angry a lot of the time. To look at a sculpture and feel some sweetness and peace and compassion for your fellow man is important to me. We don't talk about love enough now, it's not sentimental, it's vital. It's the best thing we can leave when we're gone.
